market need better xxx games
« on: October 19, 2011, 05:51:40 AM »
Hi, i really do not remember how many xxx applications i had installed in the last 2-3 years. But i cann see that the xxx game market is not growing. The res. and texture, morph quality is not on the top level comapred to the hardware level of cpu and grapih cards. I think many people would be ready to buy a really realistic game with high res texture morphs...  Today i inspected dreamstripper, the quality is really good, keep in mind that the last update was in 2008. Sex sim is also one of my favorite games. What i am looking for is a a controlable girl, high res, realistic, which can dance to music beat. Iam still waiting over 3 years for sd gogo 2. Theay announced in 2008 ??? for that, i think i have to wait another 2-3 years for it.

Have you seen Strip Kittens?  It's a 3D dancing girl we created back in 2002 and then updated in 2010 with a whole new engine and look.  We sold the Strip Kittens company a few years ago but the new owners still have us make things for it.  It's a little older now, technology-wise, but check it out if you're looking for dancing babes.

As far as better graphics, etc. believe me I hear you.  I'm a tried and true gamer and play games every day.  I also worked for years in the mainstream game world, for EA, Sony, etc. before starting my own company with my wife.  I'd love to see some of the budget that goes into mainstream games go into the adult realm, but the reality is no one is interested in touching it.

No publisher in the US will get anywhere near pure adult content.  Ultra violence is ok.  It's fine to blow people's heads apart with a shot gun, but when it comes to making sweet love and enjoying it, that's just too much.  Bizarre.  But because of this, all of us adult developers work in a field where there's just no way to really reach the levels that other mainstream games do.  We can't advertise on regular game sites, no one really talks about adult games to their friends (haha), hardly any articles get written about you, and there are only a handful of sites that cater to this market with reviews, etc.  it's kind of a weird existence as a developer, let me tell you.

These days mainstream video game developer teams have hundreds of people on them.  Contrast that to Sex Sim (and Strip Kittens, and Cherry Dolls), which were made by myself and my wife.   Even trying to find people to work with us on it is difficult.  I put out the word about 4 months ago that I was looking for a programmer, and we got about six people interested, and out of those six people all of them eventually decided that they didn't want to get involved with an adult video game to the extent we needed.  So it's just us for now.

I'd love to see this situation change one day.  Back in the 80s regular companies like Sierra made adult-themed games, but the culture cycle we're in right now deems that a taboo no-no.

Anyway... those are my thoughts for the day, haha.

Yeah, it's a very difficult market - you get so many awful games simply because almost all of them are made by guys with a bit of game development experience in their spare time, or as a mass-produced quick-sell by some porno studio who discovers they have some bedroom coders on the staff (I'd guess).

It's very rare to find someone like Jak with actual talent and dedication, who can also output enough with a small husband-and-wife team to be able to make a business out of it, as you're getting no support from outside. Mainstream (or even backwater) publishers won't touch adult games as they're mostly in it for the profit, and there's such a small market for these sort of games that they wouldn't see enough of a return. Equally, as Jak mentioned, there's the moral double-standard in the US that 'sex bad, this is a Christian country, won't someone think of the children' although violence is free-for-all.
(Personally, I think it's really sweet that you and your wife work together on this Jak, I hope it brings you closer together! I'm a Christian myself, although I'm not entirely sure where 'virtual erotica' falls within that worldview, I fully support a loving marriage and I'm also a gamer with a passion for the industry and keen to encourage people doing what they love within that world!)

I'd suggest two possible options to the publishing dilemma, although both with a risk:
a) Look for publishing in Europe:
Although there aren't that many big-budget publishers out there, there are quite a few big developers, particularly in Poland and Russia, maybe Croatia, and you're less likely to run into the institutionalised anti-sex mindset, although the risk of a smaller publisher goes with the risk of a potentially corruptly-funded publisher.
b) Look for publishing within the adult entertainment industry:
There's plenty of big-brand porn studios out there with lots of money! Show them a really good concept of a game (like Sex Sim!) and prove that there's a market within their demographic for it, and they're more likely to publish and set up a full dev team for your game than an actual game publisher!
Downsides: a porn studio is set up for publishing and distributing DVDs, not games, and might not have a lot of the resources you'd need to expand an adult game team. Also, the staffing problem is still there, I'm sure there's a whole bunch of nerds working behind the scenes in the porn industry, but finding the talented ones that won't make your game end up looking like some student's 3DSMax 1st year project (who aren't trying for a job in the mainstream games industry) is the tricky part!

It's interesting you mention the old adult Sierra games Jak, it's bizarre how something like Leisure Suit Larry has fallen from cheeky, Carry-On-style adult humour to the modern 3D incarnations horrible misogynistic frat-boy 'jokes' that amount to 'hur hur boobs dildo!' Even then though, they're not quite the same as something like Sex Sim which is a full, uncensored sex showcase, more simulation than game really. (Although I prefer that to something with more gameplay, like, say, Bonetown, which tries to shoehorn in slightly obnoxious game mechanics when you just wanna see sex!)

Jak just wanted to say congratulations on producing such an excellent game with such a minimal team, especially considering the quality of graphics and choice of characters. So thankyou for such an enjoyable game and to look forward to more content and further improvements.. :D

ok, i just share my mind with you. Target is to improve the quality. I think the guys of dreamstripper use the same software like you. I really do not which one ( daz, poser, bryce.... ) but the texture is great. For example oiled or wet, it makes a very impressive effect.  One question, which softwares did you use to build a character
