I think, the idea using a patch/update instead of every time make a complete new installation of the game, is the right way !

Regarding the update problems:
Why not just pretend that the Update.exe needs to be copied into the SexSim installation-folder and executed there?

Then it would not matter which path was Sexsim installed, no need to search the registry, etc...
this would require moving the updater to the sexsim folder, either manually -which may not be possible without 'administrator approval', and leads to tickets like "I tried moving the updater to the install folder but got access denied"- or automatically which requires the use of the registry to locate the install folder.
however neither one of these methods would fix the problem of the installer not correctly identifying the updater when ran.
another method would be to simply write the data to the current folder without performing any checks, but then someone would say "I installed the update but am still on the old version" (update installed in the Wrong location) or "I installed the update and it overwrote the pictures of my grandma!" (update installed in the More Wrong location).

this sort of highlights one of the problems that software developers deal with, there are many different types of people, and many different types of environments, and building a single thing that works for everyone is very difficult.

a bit like designing a vehicle that can fly in the air, sail on the water, and drive at highway speed

I've tried the newest version of the patch installer, and it too says the software is not installed. however the log file I have does indicate that it successfully located the installation:
vpatch reads from the registry and successfully obtains the "G:\Sex Sim" data, and then it successfully reads from G:\Sex Sim and G:\Sex Sim\sexsim_Data\sharedassets0.assets , and it repeats this again, then it reports that the installation cannot be found.
I don't run any sort of antivirus software to avoid precisely this type of issue (although it could be said that I am my own antivirus. I will leave the reader to make of that what they will  ;D).

I found the update installer's log file, but the only helpful information I can think of is the patch process' return code is 1210

hey Giselle, I did a bit of testing by
  • attempting to install the 1.7b update over the 1.7b installation
  • installing 1.7 over 1.7b (I do understand that not properly uninstalling 1.7b first will probably hose 1.7)
  • attempting to install the 1.7b update over the "new" 1.7.
step 1 said 1.7b was already installed and that the installer would do nothing
step 2 completed successfully
step 3 could not find the SexSim installation.

I recorded a 200 MB Process Monitor logfile of the installation, uninstallation, and reinstallation process, and looking through it, the installer completely ignores the G:\ drive while doing the "manual" search. I believe this is because it is listed as removable, not because it is encrypted. My reasoning for this is because the updater also does not attempt to read from my E:\ optical drive, or from my I:\ SD card.

looking through an earlier part of the log file, I find this

at which time the updater goes into its manual search mode
if there is anything else that could be looked at, (or if the entire log is desired) let me know and I'll do my best.

I was able to .7z the full log down to about 12 MB, but think I would need to upload to an external file hosting service

yes, the full installer worked properly, Sex Sim is now running 1.7b. If the updater worked just as good that would be awesome  :eyebrows:  ;D

5
okay. while I am downloading the full installer, I thought maybe I would try installing the old version (version 1.7) to the standard installation location (D:\Program Files (x86)\Sex Sim) and the installer has the default location set to my current installation folder (G:\Sex Sim). I looked through the registry for Sex Sim and found the installation information for Sex Sim under the HKCU.
In the time to write this post the 1.7b installer finished downloading and ran, and it too indicates the G:\Sex Sim installation location.

Unofficial Sex Sim Support / Re: Captcha problems

I saw the new captcha in my last post, and I must say it looked beautiful. I do understand the purpose of them, and I do support administrators in their use. I'm sorry if I came off upset, but those six or so captchas were so headdesk frustrating

7
Sexsim is not telling me there is an update available. I found out about the update via the email sent earlier today. Sexsim is reporting version 1.7, and not 1.7b.

I have installed Sexsim to a TrueCrypt encrypted drive that is indicated as removable in My Computer.

well, I just failed four more captchas:

sure, the intention is for humans to be unable to read 60% of the images, it's working fine.

yes, I have it installed to "G:\Sex Sim", and this is searching through more than just three locations. it's searching through my documents, through %appdata%, and through folders that belong to other programs, and through my other drives. I think it went through the G drive but it was a quick flash before it said it could not find Sex Sim on my computer

hey, I understand the reason for having captchas to stop spam, but I think they cross the line when they're completely unusable. Case and point:

I just got these two captchas (the second one from  this very post)
the first looks like Y or V P O N A N V
and the second looks like X P V N W

Unofficial Sex Sim Support / Update 1.7-1.7b searching entire hard drive
« on: November 03, 2013, 02:03:48 PM »
so. I downloaded the update, and I'm trying to run it, and it says "Searching." and is displaying a huge number of files. I want to know, searching for what, exactly? NORAD launch codes? my secret stash of porn? I'll tell you one thing, it clearly isn't searching for SexSim, because it's completely looking on the wrong harddrive.

When will the updater be properly coded to use the INSTALLATION information that was created when I installed SexSim instead of using DerpMode to scan every drive on my computer?
